Financial help with benefits

EVERY PERSON WITH SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA IS ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL BENEFITS (whether or not they agree to give it to you, is another question).

There are a number of benefits that a Sickle Cell sufferer is eligible for which they may be able to claim. Having been through the process already myself, and being unsuccessful, I would strongly recommend you are ready to fight for it if you are to claim any of these benefits. Some are harder to fight for than others. I have heard that some patients with SCA have gone through with their application and been successful straight away. I, on the other hand, was one of the unlucky exceptions.

Factors which seem to affect benefit success

There are a number of things which I noticed that seem to determine the success of claiming benefit. These are (and there are obviously more which they consider):
  • Frequency of illness;
  • Hospital stay;
  • Whether you are looked after by someone;
  • How well you are generally, and;
  • How well you can move around.

    Benefits you are entitled to (United Kingdom)

Everyone with Sickle Cell may be entitled to the following benefits:

Statutory Sick Pay
Disability Working Allowance
Incapacity Benefit
Council Tax Benefit
Severe Disablement Allowance
Community Care Grants
Disability Living Allowance (common claim)
Income Support/Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA)
Disability Living Allowance Mobility
Invalid Care Allowance
Attendance Allowance

Information taken from Money, for people who are sick or have a physical disability benefits booklet

These are just some of the benefits that you are entitled to if you have Sickle Cell Anaemia or some other kinds of illness in the UK.

If I can find relevant information, or benefits SPECIFICALLY relevant to people with Sickle Cell, then more information is to be added...
